Competitive Intelligence

Tactical, Operational & Strategic Analysis of Markets, Competitors & Industries

Richard

What are your favoirte competitive intelligence books (blogs, web sites, media)?

I am reading Seena Sharp's Competitive Intelligence Advantage and it is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I have read other books, but got little practical use out of them--they were much to academic. I am trying to compile a recommended bibliography for our new practitioners that want to learn more. What are your favorite books, web sites, blogs, podcasts--anything you use to keep up with competitive intelligence and anything you use to sharpen your skills?

Well, as an important building block when putting together your analytical foundation, there is "How we know what isn't so" by Thomas Gilovich.

Hi, Richard. Thanks for mentioning Seena's book. I just ordered it from amazon and will see what it's like. I second Eric's recommendations on August Jackson's Competitive Intelligence Podcast. I'm almost finished listening to them all (only have the latest episode to listen to), and while the audio quality for some episodes aren't the best, the content is pretty good, I think. August just told me he'll be putting up a new one shortly.

One guy August interviewed was Tom Hawes of JT Hawes Consulting. I haven't fully explored his website yet, but he blogs and has materials on the site so you may want to check it out: http://jthawes.com/ He also tweets so I just started following him.

A lot of the CI gurus actively tweet, so you should definitely start following them - I think a good number of them are here in this group.

Walter, I can answer this one. Ok, first "big data" players usually means HP, Oracle, SAP, IBM. These firms are extraordinarily good at handling structured data (ie numbers) in relational databases, but they don't deal well with unstructured data,…

Oh, they are doing CI, lots of it, but they call it other things, like Data mining e.g. They solve many of the same problems but from an engineering perspective Klaus

I've been turning this one over and can't find a satisfactory explanation. Why don't we see more 'big data' players doing CI consulting.  It seems to me that companies like Google, with absurdly comprehensive environmental data, doing more to move…

Hey Eric, Very nice, I really like your critical dissection of the author's convoluted and ultimately flawed, thought process which you laid out very articulately. Precisely right, what exactly is the difference here? The issue of direct vs indirec…
